Henry and Reverse Henry

Henry and Reverse Henry

After I requested this painting from my friend Jim Ether, I felt a little unsure of myself. I mean, am I really and truly the type of person who commissions a portrait of her own cat? I know now that the answer is yes, I am, and I could not be more happy about it! Jim has never even met Henry, but he captured his attitude toward life perfectly.

Don’t trust those innocent eyes and go in for a belly rub. It’s a trap!

I made my pug a vest, but she is not here to model it.
I hope Henry can forgive me someday.

I’ll be the first to admit that this one is less a knitting project and more an excuse to show you pictures of my cat.

I bought this yarn (Cascade Kid Seta, a silk/mohair laceweight) to make this shrug (and I eventually will… maybe in the spring). The evening of the day it arrived, Henry (who had never before shown an interest in yarn) walked into the living room with a skein of it sticking out of his mouth. He looked like he was eating a giant piece of cotton candy, and he seemed so incredibly proud of himself that I felt bad taking it away from him.

I put the three skeins I had away into a ziploc bag so that he couldn’t get to them anymore, and a couple days later I found him walking around carrying the ENTIRE BAG of yarn in his mouth! At this point I realized that his love for the yarn should be safely recognized, so I knit him a small pillow.

These pictures are a little misleading. He likes it okay, but not nearly as much as he likes the plastic rings from milk caps, so I guess the yarn only held intense appeal in its fluffy skein form.

He’s not the first cat I’ve known with a love for mohair. Is that a thing?

P.S. HOW CUTE ARE HIS LITTLE BLACK ARM SPOTS?! HOW CUTE IS HIS LITTLE SMUDGE NOSE??!

Dre had the softest fur of any cat, more like a bunny’s fur really, and a tiny, darling nose. She liked to burrow under the covers and whenever I visited my parents I’d wake up with her snuggled in bed with me. I’ll miss her terribly. Rest in peace, sweet kitty.
